So for the first time in a few weeks, life took charge and overtook sports for a good 2 days. Sunday I went to my Mother's graduation from Graduate School then traveled to Maine for today's new apartment hunting with my girlfriend. Then I made the trip back down to Mass. this afternoon. Did I see much sports this weekend? Answer... the big events, yes, the normal games, nope.
On Sunday my girlfriend graciously DVRed the French Open Final between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer for me. I media blacked out ESPN and Streak For Cash for the morning and early afternoon until I got to watch it. What a match it was, Federer came out firing getting up an early break before Nadal took over. Nadal won the first set 7-5. Federer fired back in the 2nd set but lost in a tiebreak 7-6. They had a short rain delay in that set and it looked like it re-energized Roger who rallied back to win the 3rd set 7-5. It looked like the match could go the distance after Federer gathered up his pride and willed his way back in it, but it was not meant to be as Nadal regained his form and pounded Federer 6-1 in the 4th set to repeat as king of Roland Garros. Nadal won his 6th French Open title and has still only lost once on the clay in Paris in his career. A good sign for the sport was that the final had the highest TV rating in 12 years. Next up in the majors is Wimbledon that starts June 20th in England.
Sunday night I also got a chance to watch the NBA Finals Game 3 in Dallas. What a chance Dallas had to take control of the series and even end the series if they were to win all 3 games at home but it was not to be. The Heat rallied from their collapse in Game 2 to take a 2-1 series lead behind Dwayne Wade's 29 points, 11 rebounds (both team highs) and 3 assists as the Heat won 88-86. Dirk Nowitzki put up 34 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort. Bigger news than the finals that occurred today though, was that the Golden State Warriors named ESPN analyst and former standout guard Mark Jackson their next head coach. We will miss Mark in the booth with Van Gundy but wish him the best of luck in Golden State with a very guard heavy team. (Monta Ellis and Stephan Curry)
Saturday Night's Bruins-Canucks game was once again a HUGE loss for the Bruins as they let a 2-1 lead slip away midway through the 3rd period and lost 11 seconds into Overtime. Just devastating but as I write this post they have come back firing behind the home crowd as they lead the Canucks 4-0 midway through the 3rd period of Game 3. If the Bruins hold on, which I assume they will it will be 2-1 with Game 4 being Wednesday night at the Garden at 8pm on Versus.
Biggest Winner and Loser of the Night was just too difficult to decide after missing so much action Sunday and Monday. So we will take a short hiatus from it and bring it back in full force tomorrow!
