Monday, what a great start to the week! The Bruins thrashed the Canucks in a physical Game 3, 8-1. Nathan Horton, lost for the series, was injured less than 6 minutes into the game after a blindside hit from Defenseman Aaron Rome. The first period was scoreless but had a flurry of chances from both teams. But once the 2nd period started the Bruins awoke from hibernation, as Andrew Ference scored 11 seconds into the period. Then finally the Bruins powerplay struck as Mark Recchi scored 4 minutes in. Soon after they struck on Brad Marchand's shorthanded goal and added one more goal from David Krejci to go up 4-0 after two periods. But rather than taking their feet off the throat of the Canucks like Game 2's 3rd period collapse, they came out with passion and energy, playing for Hortie as many of the players said. Daniel Paille scored another shorthanded goal for the Bruins before the Canucks finally got on the board on a goal by Jannik Hansen with 6 minutes left. Recchi once more, Brian Kelly and Michael Ryder added insult to injury to end the game mercifully at 8-1. Chippiness was at a high by the Canucks and Bruin tough man, Shawn Thornton sure got his fill of hitting and revenge as well. Should be interesting to see how it all plays out tomorrow night in Game 4. 8pm on Versus.
A mostly full slate of MLB games last night. With the big headlines being Cliff Lee K-ing 10 in the 3-1 win over the Dodgers, 20 runs scored in Texas as Brendan Boesch hits 2 HRs for the Tigers en route to their 13-7 win, and John Danks gets his first win of the year in the 3-1 win over the Mariners. Many more stories were showcased as Michael Morse stayed hot for the Nationals as they got to Tim Lincecum for 4 runs in 5 innings but blew the lead and lost 5-4 in 13 innings. David Price dominated the Angels throwing 7 innings of 5 hit, 1 run ball while striking out 7 while winning his 7th game of the year 5-1. A combined effort by 6 pitchers for the Rockies shut out the Padres 3-0 as Houston Street got his 16th save of the season to finish off the dazzling nice. The MLB Draft was last night as well, many big name prospects flew off the board but one pick stood out to me at #51 in the compensation round. The Yankees took Dante Bichette Jr. with this pick, the 6'1'' outfielder was a standout player when I saw him a few years ago in the Little League World Series, he has good pedigree and seems like a good young talent to bring along slowly (if he signs). Gerit Cole went #1 overall to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cole out of UCLA can throw it upwards of 102 but somehow only had a mediocre record last year in college. He was originally drafted by the Yankees out of high school but decided to go to school in Englewood.
Biggest Winner of the Night: Gotta give this as a collective effort to the Bruins. Thomas was phenomenal stopping 40 of 41 shots while his offense exploded for 8 goals by 7 different players (only 2 were topflight scorers on the team). Hopefully that same team comes out Wednesday night.
Biggest Loser of the Night: Aaron Rome, he may have taken over as public enemy number one in Boston but Alex Burrows still has a special place in the fans hearts or fingers in his case. I think the punishment fit the crime as Horton is out for the series, so too should Rome be for the infraction. This time the NHL got it right. Nice job Bettman.
