Being unemployed has some sort of benefit this week as daytime sports are in full swing with Wimbledon getting started and the NCAA Baseball College World Series firing up in Omaha. The news earlier in the weekend was questioning whether the World Series would happen since the Missouri River was threatening to crest and flood Omaha and the new ballpark there. So far so good, as the only issue was rain and wind that suspended the Florida-Vanderbilt game last night in the 6th inning, for now. Yet the river keeps inching closer and closer as seen here:
ESPN.comSo far one team has been eliminated from the double-elimination tournament at the hands of University of North Carolina Freshman Pitcher Kent Emmanuel. Emmanuel threw a complete game shutout against the Texas Longhorns yesterday afternoon to keep Coach Augie at 666 career wins. Today the completion of that Vandy-Florida game starts the action off, with an elimination game between University of California and Texas A&M University to follow and then the nightcap is a winners bracket game between University of South Carolina and University of Virginia. I like a Vanderbilt-Virginia final here.
Wimbledon starts Day 2 today as it hopes to finish up both Men's and Women's first round games. Yesterday saw #1 seed Rafael Nadal beat American Michael Russell 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, Great Britain hopeful and favorite Andy Murray tripped up in the first set but dominated from then on to defeat Daniel Gimeno-Traver 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0. Also 10th seeded American Mardy Fish won in straight sets of Marcel Granollers 7-6, 7-6, 6-4. On the Women's side Venus Williams returned to action as the 23rd seed and won easily over Akqul Amanmurdova 6-3, 6-1, and 2nd seeded Vera Zvonerva was pushed by American Alison Riske but won 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. I'll make my Wimbledon predictions by taking Roger Federer over Andy Murray and Caroline Wozniacki over Vera Zvonerva.
I love watching both of these events but certainly Wimbledon more because of the nonstop action. TV coverage starts at 7 AM EST and runs until around 5 PM EST... just a great day of Tennis for all of us.
Biggest Winner of the Night: Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers. I stayed away from baseball today mostly to touch on the other major events that are going on for a limited time rather than a regular season. But you have to give major props up to Kershaw who absolutely dominated the Detroit Tigers in Dodger Stadium by throwing a complete-game 2-hit shutout walking 1 batter and striking out 11. Oh and he had a 2 RBI single as well to cushion the lead to 4-0.
Biggest Loser of the Night: The Dodgers front office. While this news was swirling last night it went official this morning, as Bud Selig and Major League Baseball rejected Frank McCourt's proposed TV deal that was part of his divorce settlement that was agreed upon earlier this week. The TV deal was apparently worth around $3 billion dollars that would give the McCourts $385 million dollars upfront. This once again puts the team in limbo and Dodger fans everywhere are back to wondering what will happen with their team.
