US Women Do it Again and Fielder Makes Dreams Come True in Phoenix

The US Women do it again! How amazing is this run to the World Cup Finals? Pretty darn amazing since the squad barely qualified for the tournament due to an untimely loss to Mexico. But the women led by Captain Christie Rampone, Abby Wambach and Shannon Boxx who are all multiple World Cup veterans, never doubted their team's chances in Germany. And apparently, we never should have doubted them either since an excellent 3-1 victory over France on Wednesday sealed their trip to the Finals. Sunday afternoon (2pm EST) the Americans will take on surprise dandies, the Japanese who defeated Sweden 3-1 to had the favored Swedes their first loss of the tournament (they had not drawn either). The Americans were helped out by a 9th minute goal by Lauren Cheney, a 79th minute header goal by Abby Wambach and the one that put the game out of reach, an 82nd minute goal by substitute Alex Morgan. France had equalized the match early in the 2nd half by a brilliant long range strike from Sonia Bompastor but were unable to get anything else past the American's defense and goaltender Hope Solo. Wambach scored for the 3rd straight game and is currently 1 goal behind Brazil's Marta (who has no games left) for the Golden Boot award, which is given to the player who scores the most goals in the World Cup competition. The US women will celebrate this win just like they did the win over Brazil, by hitting the town and soaking up the victory by enjoying themselves but not getting ahead of themselves as every player had said in postgame interviews, one more to go. GO USA!!! BEAT JAPAN!!

The National League defeated the American League 5-1 last night in the 82nd Annual MLB All-Star Game held for the first time in Phoenix, Arizona. Prince Fielder hit the go-ahead 3 run home run off of C.J. Wilson to hand him the loss and gift the win to Tyler Clippard who got the win without retiring a single batter after giving up a single but was granted the out when Hunter Pence threw out Jose Bautista at the plate to end the inning. Adrian Gonzalez provided the only run for the AL with a solo home run off of Cliff Lee in the 4th inning. Andre Ethier had an RBI single in the 5th and Pablo Sandoval hit a ground rule double RBI in the 7th for the NL. Brian Wilson retired the 2 batters he faced after coming in to a 2 on, 1 out situation to earn the save for the NL and secure home field advantage in the World Series.

Winner of the Night: Toss up between the US Women's Team and Prince Fielder but we'll give it to Fielder who after being booed changed people's minds with a 3-run home run to lead the NL to the win in the All-Star Game.

Loser of the Night: Francisco Rodriguez. K-Rod was traded from the New York Mets to the Milwaukee Brewers with cash for 2 players to be named later. K-Rod who was having a solid season as a closer will now apparently move to the set-up role for John Axford who has 19 consecutive saves for the Brew-Crew.
